Why Diamond Certificates Matter

Diamond certificates and grading reports are issued by diamond grading laboratories, they detail the main characteristics of the diamond. These are very important when it comes to selling or buying diamonds. They help you understand what your diamond is worth.

However, all diamond laboratories vary in the accuracy of their gradings. As diamond experts, we have a thorough understanding of how reliable each diamond grading laboratory is.

Different Diamond Grading Laboratories

  • The GIA (Gemological Institute of America): Widely considered the most reputable laboratory in the diamond industry. At WP Diamonds, we hold the GIA’s grading in high standing. If you have a GIA report, our experts will be able to provide you with a fast and accurate price quote. However, we do often find significant differences between GIA reports and other laboratories or appraisals.
  • AGS (the American Gem Society): A reputable diamond grading laboratory.
  • EGL (European Gemological Laboratory) and IGI (International Gemological Institute): These laboratories tend to be relatively reliable. However, their grading standards are fairly lenient in comparison to the GIA’s strict standards.

Jeweler’s Appraisals or Insurance Appraisals

Appraisals are for insurance purposes. These gradings tend to be approximations of the characteristics of the diamond and not reliable grades.
